Modelling the Environment

A model is a substitute for the real system. Scientist use models to study the real life situation when it is easier to work with models than such systems. Virtually everyone deal with models everyday. Our body and the environment consist series of system which can be modelled to get full understanding. Models can be informal, physically based and mathematical (emperical)or computational in nature. This book focuses on the mathematical model of the environment to explain the interconnection with the ecosystem. The book is highly recommended.

GIS for Environmental Decision-Making

Although environmental problems have always being with us on the earth’s surface, however, the world at present is faced with environmental problems of unprecedented proportions (earthquakes, volcanic eruption, landslides, tsunamis erosion forest fires etc.).These problems either natural, man-made or both and have tremendous impacts on the quality of life on earth. A clear understanding and solution to some of the problems require specialized knowledge of cause of the events, the processes involved, their impacts and possible mitigation and solutions. Geography and geospatial studies offers a unique opportunity to understand these problems and deal with them. GIS for example benefits the society in that it help us in deriving information for decision-making, strategic planning exercises, and finding solutions to spatially related problems. GIS for Environmental Decision-Making is a textbook that provides a broad prospective on the current state of GIS for environmental decision-making and emphasizes the importance of matters related to data, analysis, and modeling tools, as well as stakeholder participation insight into The book is divided into three sections, which effectively relate to three key aspects of the decision-making process as supported by GIS: data required, tools being developed, and aspects of participation. GIS for Environmental Decision-Making also provides a clear illustration of how the use of GIS can make significant contributions to trans-disciplinary initiatives to address environmental problems. GIS and Decision Making

Map as a powerful tool

The importance of maps to the everyday activities of man on the earth’s surface cannot be overemphasized.. We have come to the full realization of this powerful tool and geographers and non-geographers have continued to develop interest in the maps. The art and science of map-making is called cartography. Maps of places give details as to the geographic location, physical characteristics, climate profile, vegetative structure, flora and fauna, soil structure, latitude and longitude, etc. Map use have developed tremendously in developed countries of the world and used in many fields of study like architecture, space, medicine (DNA and Brain mapping ), computer science. a map gives a very quick view of a detailed document. It is widely used by tourists to find interesting sites and for navigation. By viewing a map tourist can understand the routes even if they have never visited a place. However, in developing the use of maps is still limited to quite a few people in specialized field. Many still believe that maps is just for geographers alone, without realizing that they use map in one way or the other in their daily activities. It is therefore important for everybody to be acquainted with the basic map skill to guide them as they go about their activities. These can be realized through the reading to books and articles that discuss the rudiments of map interpretation.

Basic knowledege about geospatial science and its application to everyday life is quite important in our schools. This knowlwdge taught right from the secondary schools. Geography and geospatial science education (e.g. GIS) based on exploring real-world issues is will play a considerable role in developing students knowledge of their immediate communities and the world at large. studies in developing countries such as the USA have shown that the use of geographic information systems (GIS) technology and methods has tremendous potential to incorporate issues-based and inquiry-based education, and to increase the relevancy and utility of the disciplines in which they used. Click Here Geographic information systems make the process of presenting and analyzing geographic information easier, so they accelerate geographic inquiry. Students and teachers alike need to be informed through the use of the right textbooks which gives easy to learn guide on the subject matter. A while range of book are presently available which gives introduction into to the subject and assist the students to grasp the full import of what is being taught. Check This
